Our World- Global Trends and challenges
The world is interconnected- one family which should be healthy, self reliant
and safe.
Will there be poverty or promise?
Despair or hope?
What would the world be like if we all did our part?
True transformation can happen when the results are sustainable.
Together we can envision a better future for the 1 billion children living in
poverty.
The role of humanitarian assistance is: relief and rehabilitation,
helping people to help themselves, and a process of mutual learning.
In the US there are 28,500 shopping malls for 300 million citizens.
25,000 Americans die from gun related trauma per year
The typical American watches 4 hours of TV per day
5-% of American families watch TV while eating meals together
The US has 5% of the world’s population but 25% of the world’s prisoners (2
million).
The 40 hour work week has now risen to 50-60 hrs per week
37% of US youth are in college; about 70% will complete their degree
People here typically have 9 different jobs in their lifetime.
In the developing world, youth become like time bombs- the scarcity of
opportunity, disparity between rich and poor is substantial
3 of the richest people in the world make more money than 40 of the poorest
nations together.
The richest 20% of the world consume 86% of the world’s resources.
37 million people worldwide are displaced.
The biggest migrations are to the cities.
Girls are left behind educationally.
The developing world suffers from 90% of the world’s diseases and has access to
only 10% of the world’s medical resources.
100 million lives are gone due to the AIDS epidemic.
AIDS has destabilized whole countries and regions, creating a generation of
orphans, rootless, loveless, no physical or emotional stability, no emotional
anchors.
Children witness their mothers dying- the rest of the world often looks on with
complacency.
28,000 children die daily from preventable diseases
100 million children are on the street with no education, no livelihood
Leading to a rampant increase in child abuse
EVERYTHING THAT WE DO SHOULD KEEP THE CHILDREN’S WELFARE FOREMOST IN OUR MINDS
1.2 billion people live in less than $1 per day
3 billion people live in either political or religious environments where people
are not allowed to explore ideas.
Eliminating the root causes of human suffering is the critical issue of our
time.
We must recognize that the security of the world means understanding our
interdependence and offering hope and opportunity to the destitute of all
nations.
This will require a political narrative of courage and leadership.
There is nothing so valuable than getting engaged in the struggle for social
justice and equality.
An old man once said to him:
“Draw a line in the sand. One side is war, the other side peace,
Just as every action in war has a consequence, so does every action in peace.”
There will always be something each of us can do.
EVERY HUMAN BEING HAS A GREAT UNKNOWN GIFT TO CARE, TO BE COMPASSIONATE, TO MAKE
THINGS BETTER.
WE ARE A GLOBAL COMMUNITY AND IT IS IN OUR OWN SELF INTEREST TO ACT INDIVIDUALLY
AND COLLECTIVELY TO APPROACH AND SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS.
